The Dell PowerEdge FC630 is a compute node designed for the modular FX2 converged infrastructure platform. The FX2 system will support up to four Dell FC630 half-width, two-socket compute blocks to deliver impressive performance and scalability.
Up to four PowerEdge FC630 compute blocks can be hosted in the 2u PowerEdge FX2 chassis, which has been described as a cluster in a box and combines compute, networking, and storage into a compact 2u space. Four FC630 compute nodes will support up to eight processors and 178 processor cores total in Dell's FX2 converged infrastructure platform. In addition to the half-width FC630, several other compute and storage blocks are supported on the FX2 including; the quarter-width PowerEdge FC430, the half-width PowerEdge FM120x4, the half-width PowerEdge FD332 storage module, and the full-width PowerEdge FC830. The PowerEdge FC630 compute block is ideal for large databases and highly virtualized environments, and can be paired with other compute modules or the FD332 storage module for terabytes of direct attached storage (DAS).
Dell's FC630 features Intel's C610 chipset and can be outfitted with either one or two 4- to 18-core Xeon E5-2600 v3 CPU's, or 4- to 22-core Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors. Each processor supports 12 memory modules, and with two processors installed a total of 24 memory sockets are active. Power is provided on the FX2 chassis and includes an 1100W, 1600W, or 2000W hot plug PSU with 1 + 1 redundancy or a non-redundant configuration using just one PSU.
A FC630 with two processors and all 24 memory slots loaded with 64GB DIMM modules will deliver up to 1.5TB of memory. Each 12-socket set is organized into four channels of three memory slot. DDR4 Load Reduced DIMM (LRDIMM) modules and registered DIMM (RDIMM) modules are supported but cannot be mixed. To realize 2400MT/s transfer speeds requires a compatible Xeon E5-2600 v4 processor. Using top of the line Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors will provide a top transfer speed of 2133MT/s. Some mixing of memory capacities is allowed but the modules with the highest capacity must be installed first and follow a specific load order.
Administrators have options for storage on Dell's FC630 server block including SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs. All drives are hot-swappable and there's also support for PowerEdge Express Flash NVMe PCIe SSDs. Choose from two different chassis options, either 8 x 1.8-inch SSD's or a version that supports 2 x 2.5-inch SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs. For substantial direct attached storage, the FC630 easily pairs with the half-width FD332 storage block which supports 16 x 2.5-inch drives. A single FC630 module can be paired with up to three PowerEdge FD332 storage modules to access up to 48 storage devices. There are options for RAID and storage controllers, including a built-in S130 software RAID controller that supports limited RAID. Using other PERC HD/RAID controllers will provide the whole range of RAID options. There's also an optional internal dual SD Module (IDSDM) for a hypervisor that supports single card operation or dual card operation for redundancy when used in mirror mode.
Eight PCIe 3.0 slots on the FX2s chassis automatically map to installed compute modules through the backplane. Each FC630 compute module can access two PCIe slots of the eight supported on the FX2s chassis and can be used for additional external HD controllers, NICs or HBAs. When paired with the FD332 storage block two more PCIe slots are assigned to the compute block. With three FD32 storage blocks and a single PowerEdge FC630 all eight PCIe modules are routed to the compute block. Two FN I/O modules or aggregators can be incorporated on the FX2 chassis for network connectivity and up to eight 10GBE ports. The I/O Aggregators replace the standard network interface, simplifying cable management and optimizing "east/west" server to server traffic within the FX2 chassis and LAN/SAN convergence. There are three different Aggregator modules to choose from. Two that support four ports with either copper or fiber optic cables, and a third aggregator module that offers a combination of four 10GBE ports and two fiber channel 2 plus 2 ports of SFP and 10GBE. Up to 20 FX2 chassis can be daisy-chained together and managed from a single console using the chassis management controller (CMC).
The FX2 chassis, without the "s", is a lower-cost alternative that does not support any PCIe slots but will support the other compute modules. The FM120x4 compute module is not supported on the FX2s chassis and is designed specifically for the FX2 (no "s").

There are two FX2 chassis. One with no PCIe slots, the FX2, and another which supports eight PCIe slots, the FX2s. Both are compatible with the PowerEdge FC430, PowerEdge FC630, PowerEdge FC830, and the FD332 storage block. The FC430 is a quarter-width compute module that can support two Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors or a single E5-1600 v3 processor. Up to eight FC430 compute modules can be installed in the FX2 chassis for a maximum of 2TB of memory. The FC430 can also be used with the other compute modules or the FD332 storage sled for access to 16 additional drives, which can be split between two servers. Two device bays up front supports either two 1.8-inch uSATA drives or an optional low-latency configuration that combines a single 1.8-inch drive with two QSFP+ compact, hot-pluggable transceiver connectors for Ethernet or Infiniband connectivity. Each compute sled has access to one PCIe 3.0 slot on the FX2s chassis. With an optimal balance of memory and storage, this module is perfect for high-speed I/O and mainstream enterprise workloads, including mid-sized virtualization and database environments. The low-latency Infiniband configuration is ideal for High Frequency Trading and High Performance Computing.
Designed for use in Dell's FX2s and FX2 2U enclosures, the Dell EMC PowerEdge FC640 server is a half-width, two-socket compute module. It provides dual 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with significantly improved performance, and up to 2TB of memory. The FX2s chassis can support two of the full-width FC830 compute sleds or a single node with four FC430s, two FC630s, or two FD332 storage modules. Each FC830 has 48 DDR4 DIMM slots, 12 slots per processor, for 1.5TB of memory per sled with transfer speeds of up to 2400 MT/s when paried with an appropriate Xeon v4 processor. The FC830 also features generous, scalable on-board storage with either eight 2.5-inch drives or an optional configuration with 16 x 1.8" SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs. Each compute module features its own hot-plug storage, either SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs. For more storage, Administrators can install up to three FD332 storage blocks for dense, scalable DAS. Each FD332 supports up to 16 hot-plug direct attached SFF drives either SAS or SATA SSDs or HDDS. An optional dual RAID controller provides split access to the supported drives. Depending on configuration up to three FD332s can be installed on the system with either the FC430, FC630, or the FC830 compute sleds.
The FM120x4 is a half-width compute module designed specifically for the FX2 enclosure without any PCIe slots. Offering a cost effective option, each compute sled features four Atom C2000 processors. The C2000 Atom processors are described by Intel as a system-on-a-chip (SoC). With four modules installed up to 16 micro-servers are available in each FX2 chassis. The FM120x4 is the only compute module that uses the Intel Atom C2000 System on a Chip processor with up to eight cores. Each module supports four processors and each processor supports two DIMM modules, UDIMM only, for 8 DIMMS per sled. Each processor also supports one 2.5-inch HD or two 1.8-inch SSDs. No PCI slots are available and communications are handled by the pass through, with 2 per processor for 8 total that are capable of 1Gb through the FX2 chassis. Only software RAID is supported. This system is a lower cost alternative to the FX2s and is ideal for static web hosting and light-weight processing.
