Blade servers like Dell's PowerEdge M610 blade server offer a modular building block approach to address scalability and quick updates to network infrastructure. Up to 16 half-height server blades can be hosted on Dell's PowerEdge M1000e enclosure, or eight full-height blades, or a mix of the two. The M1000e blade enclosure provides shared power, cooling, and networking to reduce operational costs. This platform also features flexibility, energy efficiency, and simplified management to deliver a faster ROI. The enclosure also supports several generations of blade servers, in addition to a future-ready passive midplane for compatibility with future technologies.


Intel's 5520 chipset supports a maximum of two Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 processors with up to six cores each and feature Intel Turbo Boost technology to increase performance during peak usage. With 16 half-height Dell M610 servers installed in the M1000e enclosure adds up to impressive performance with 32 processors supporting 192 cores, and potentially 3072GB of memory in a 10U M1000e chassis.


There are 12 memory slots total, with each processor controlling three memory channels with two memory slots per channel. Both DDR3 unbuffered (UDIMM) and registered (RDIMM) memory modules are supported, but cannot be mixed. Single-rank, dual-rank, and quad-rank memory modules are supported. Memory speed is dependent on the speed of the supported processors, the speed of the supported DIMMs, and the memory configuration, with all conforming to the speed of the slowest performer. When populating the system board with memory modules, administrators should follow stated guidelines in the technical guide.


Two 2.5-inch SAS or SATA SSDs, or SAS and nearline HDDs for a maximum of 1.8TB of storage are supported on this blade server. Like the other Gen11 modular blade server line up, Administrators can choose between a few different HD/RAID controller options including the PERC H200 Modular (6Gb/s), and the PERC H700 Modular (6Gb/s) controllers. The H700 RAID controller offers either a 512MB battery-backed cache or a 512MB or 1GB NVMe battery-backed cache.

The PowerEdge M610 server offers increased I/O capabilities supported by a 50% increase in memory capacity compared to the previous generation M600, essential for database performance and virtualization. The FlexIO technology enables Administrators to quickly add or change I/O components to support future growth with network interface cards (NICs) that support a range of modular GbE, 10GbE, and enhanced Ethernet switches for high performance computing (HPC). Two PCIe 2.0 ports support a variety of mezzanine cards supported by complimentary fabric I/O Modules (IOM) on the M1000e. External storage is also supported with the appropriate mezzanine cards on the blade server and IOM modules installed in the M1000e enclosure.


Once again, Dell's OpenManage suite of tools coupled with iDRAC with LifeCycle controller gives Administrators options for managing, deploying, and upgrading the system. Dell's Chassis Management Controller (CMC) is also present on the M1000e enclosure to enable management of singe blade, groups of blades, or management at the chassis and enclosure level both local and remotely using a standard browser interface.


Dell's PowerEdge M610 blade server offers scalability and performance to support a number of common and high-performance computing applications. This is an excellent general use blade server, ideal for data centers and highly virtualized applications.
