The Dell PowerEdge R920 features four sockets and is designed for massive scale-out. It supports generous memory and storage in a 4u chassis and is an excellent choice for in-memory database applications, high-performance computing, and Big Data.
A massive memory footprint allows the PowerEdge R920 server to get the job done quickly, and efficiently. This is a server with room to grow. The 4u chassis supports 96 memory modules and up to 24 internal hard drives. There's also a chassis option that supports sixteen HDDs and up to eight Express Flash SSDs for high-speed data access and tiered storage support. An abundance of PCIe slots gives administrators options for increased bandwidth and optional storage controllers. This server is an excellent choice for large-scale virtualization.
Administrators can install a maximum of two Intel Xeon E7-2800 v2 family processors but to support four processors choose from either the E7-4800 v2 or E7-8800 v2 CPUs. Using four top of the line E7 v2 processors, that's 60 cores total with each processor supporting 15 cores. Impressive, to say the least.
There are two basic chassis configurations for the PowerEdge R920. One that supports 4 to 24 front-mounted 2.5-inch drives. And another chassis with up to 16 2.5-inch drives, paired with up to 8 NVMe PCIe 2.5-inch SSDs for tiered storage. The various configurations support SAS, SATA, or nearline SAS 2.5-inch HDDs and SSDs. Dell PowerEdge NVMe Express Flash PCIe SSDs offer a significant improvement over standard hard drives offering tremendous speed and low latency. A PERC H730P controller offers high-performance internal RAID support for direct attached storage (DAS) and the full range of RAID options. For external RAID support the PERC H810 PCIe RAID controller offers eight ports and 6Gb/s access, again with the full range of RAID options. A dual-PERC controller configuration enables a tiered storage configuration with one controller in charge of higher-performing SSD drives, while the other handles less frequently accessed files using slower but higher capacity HDDs. This server supports a rack network daughter card (RNDC) to provide a custom NIC solution. The network daughter card provides the same benefits as the LAN on motherboard (LOM) design but offers more features and flexibility with an easy upgrade from 1GB to 10GB LAN speeds.
Ninty-six memory module slots are supported on the Dell R920 total! Each CPU supports 24 memory modules. Installing top of the line 64GB DDR3 load reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules adds up to 6TB of memory. DDR3 RDIMM modules are also supported. Depending on your choice of CPU, transfer speeds of up to 1600MT/s are available. Although keep in mind, the transfer speed will default to the slowest performer between the CPU and memory, so make sure both CPU and memory modules support your target transfer speed.
Up to 32 PCIe lanes are supported by each E7 v2 processor, however the number of supported PCIe slots and bandwidth is dependent on the number of processors installed. With four processors installed plus the optional left and right PCIe risers up to ten PCIe 3.0 slots are available. The PCIe slots offer alternatives for more NICs, HD controllers or converged network adapters for increased I/O or large enterprise SAN environments. An optional internal Dual SD module provides redundant failover for the hypervisor when used in mirror mode.
Like Dell's other Gen12 servers, iDRAC7 Express for out of band and remote management without the need to install additional software. Administrators can easily upgrade to Enterprise by purchasing an upgrade license key. Upgrading to Enterprise will also activate the front-mounted iDRAC SD card slot and dedicated iDRAC port. OpenManage Essentials leverages the embedded iDRAC7 module with Lifecycle controller to simplify and automate common server lifecycle management tasks remotely. OpenManage includes Server Configuration Management capabilities to automate configuration and deployment of bare metal servers. iDRAC also makes it easy to configure, deploy, and update the PERC controllers out of band.
The Dell PowerEdge R920 rack server offers massive performance, memory, and storage. It excels at high performance computing, featuring accessible high-density memory for virtualization and demanding applications. With support for up to 24 2.5-inch hard drives and 6TB of memory, this server is a natural for hosting in-memory storage and data base applications to process transactions and run analytics in real-time like SAP HANA. Additional uses include; Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), Customer Relationship management (CRM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and many others.
